My Favorite Way To Practice Self Care

Every time I bring up the subject of lingerie, I get one of the following:

“I love wearing lingerie for my man (or woman).”

“My man doesn’t care for lingerie, he’d rather see me naked.”

“This lingerie is going to turn him on.”

“I would wear lingerie, but I have no one to wear it for.”

And I always respond with, “Have you ever thought about wearing lingerie for yourself?”

For a lot of women, lingerie goes hand and hand with sex.  The only time that they pull their lingerie out of the closet is when there’s someone coming over and they want to put it on ’em. However, I’ve come to find that lingerie is best worn for you.

Yes, I said it. FOR YOURSELF!

About a year ago, I started packing lingerie and a silk robe in my luggage to take on my trips. At first, it was for my FaceTime calls (wink, wink), but slowly I came to find that I loved being in lingerie. It made me feel empowered, sexy, and free so I started wearing it for myself and if I just so happened to get that FaceTime call… well I’ll leave that up to your imagination.

On my layovers for work, I started this routine where I would take a hot & cold hydrotherapy shower or a bubble bath, lotion up with a sexy scent, get into my sexy jammies, pour me a glass of wine or tea, and relax and unwind with my favorite book or movie.

It became one of my favorite forms of self-care.  It felt good to embrace my body- every curve, stretch mark, and roll.  I enjoyed seeing myself in the mirror in the lingerie. I felt sexy, luxurious, and free. There was no one there to judge me. There was no one there to perform for except myself – and while I felt very vulnerable it was a vulnerability that I could embrace.

There was no one there but me.

I would take moments to casually look in the mirror examining and learning every part of me, falling in love with different parts of myself.  It’s sort of like when you’re being mindful and you learn to be present. While I was in that mirror, I studied my body finding curves I was grateful for and appreciating how I filled out the different parts of the garment.

Today, I still wear my lingerie on layovers and each time I wear a piece out of my closet I still feel that sense of sexiness and confidence.

I honestly would encourage every woman to try wearing lingerie for you. I would also encourage buying multiple pieces so that you can see how you look in different colors and shapes. There are all types of pieces of lingerie that you can buy. My favorite pieces are lacy bodysuits, silk teddies and slips, but it’s different for everyone.

It honestly depends on your body type and what you feel most confident in.

Here’s a little guide to help you:

pear shaped figure

If you have a pear shaped figure, your waist is wider than your bust, you have fuller hips, your shoulders a narrow in comparison to your hips and you have a fuller rear.

For you, styles like baby dolls and chemises that draw attention to your upper body are best.

apple shaped figure

If you have an apple shaped figure, it means that you are generally well proportioned, your shoulders are broader than your hips, and you don’t have a well-defined waistline.

For you, lingerie that elongates your body is best. Bodysuits, chemises, baby doll negligees, and halter top and high waist sets generally accentuate your body well.

hourglass figure

Ladies with an hourglass shape are typically curvy, have a well-defined waist and have bust and hip measurements are fairly even.

For you, styles that draw attention to your waistline are best. Bustiers, high leg panties, and suspender belts work well for you. Baby dolls, gowns, and push up bras with high-waisted panty sets look good on you as well.

rectangular figure

If you have a rectangular shape, you are not particularly curvy; your shoulders and hips are nearly the same measurements, you waist is straight up and down, and your weight is evenly distributed throughout your body.

For ladies with rectangular shapes, lingerie that gives you curves is best.  You can create curves by wearing ruffles, crop tops with briefs, and push up bra sets.

larger chests

Opt for lingerie that not only will accentuate your breasts, but will also support your breasts.

smaller chests

If you want to accentuate your breasts try a push up bra. A racerback bra would also be flattering on you.

shorter legs

If you want to have the illusion of longer legs, choose shorter lingerie pieces or pieces with a split.

long legs

Choose lingerie that accentuates your legs. Short or mid length pieces will look well on you.
